Russian Asset Ron Johnson Plans to Filibuster Stimulus Bill

The Democratic-led United States Senate was poised to vote on the American Rescue Plan – President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 economic relief package – this week. That goal was punted, however, when Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) announced on Wednesday afternoon that he intends to filibuster the legislation.

Why? Because Republicans in both the Senate and the House of Representatives – which voted on and passed the bill this past Saturday – are steadfastly opposed to providing the struggling American economy and millions of cash-strapped workers with another round of financial support despite overwhelming public support for the bill.

“NOW: Sen. Ron Johnson confirms to Milwaukee radio station that he will force the Senate to read the entire COVID bill out loud before debate, amendments and votes can happen. That will take an estimated 10 hours or so,” PBS NewsHour correspondent Lisa Desjardins reported on Twitter.

“*Whom* I most feel sorry for at times like this: 1. The Senate clerks 2. The many bldg + food staffers w two jobs as it is. 3. The Sen stenographers (“reporters” officially) who switch off standing on the floor recording every word 4. The press gallery staffs 5. Ppl’s pets,” Desjardins added.

Democrats in the 50-50 split Senate do not need any Republican votes to pass the American Rescue Plan, thanks to Vice President Kamala Harris’s power to break ties.

But what Johnson’s objective is beyond deepening the pandemic-induced pain is unclear.

What is abundantly apparent is the need for Democrats to kill the filibuster, which has been abused by Republicans as a weapon against progress for far too long.
