TIME magazine reported on Wednesday that Pompeo’s departure from his post as secretary wasn’t exactly a secret, but that the timeline he was working on before had to be sped up due to political worries he had.

Neither Pompeo nor the State Department would comment on the subject, except to say that he “is only focused on executing President Trump’s foreign policy goals and completing the mission for the American people at the State Department.”

Pompeo is rumored to be planning a run for Senator in the state of Kansas in 2020. His initial plan, these sources said, was to resign from leading the State Department next spring and launch his campaign then. But due to continued controversies surrounding President Donald Trump, including the negative attention that the impeachment inquiry is drawing, Pompeo is instead rumored to be planning to leave his office much sooner.

According to those three GOP sources, Pompeo is looking for the smoothest exit he can possibly make in order to save face politically after he departs. But that may be difficult to accomplish, seeing as the impeachment investigation is starting to feature his name more and more as days go by.

On Wednesday, the same day the rumors of Pompeo’s imminent resignation were reported on, EU Ambassador Gordon Sondland stated that the secretary of State was among a number of Trump administration officials, including Trump himself, part of an effort to prod Ukraine into accepting the terms of a quid pro quo.

“They knew what we were doing and why. Everyone was in the loop. It was no secret,” Sondland said, per reporting from NBC News.
