Roger Stone Will Plead the 5th Before House Select Committee [VIDEO]

The Fifth Amendment protects against compelling a person to be a witness against themselves in a criminal case. “You see the mob takes the Fifth,” Donald Trump famously said during a 2016 campaign stop in Iowa. “If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?”

Maybe he’d like to ask that of one of his closest cronies, former “advisor” Roger Stone, who’s set to appear before the January 6th House Select Committee on Friday, but intends to take the Fifth on every single question, according to his lawyer.

Stone originally had said he wouldn’t testify at all, but since not showing up for a Congressional subpoena has some serious consequences, the Dirty Trickster is pulling a fast one by showing up but keeping his lips zipped. At least, he’s keeping them zipped for Congress.

In their subpoena, the Select Committee said Stone was “was reportedly in Washington on January 5th and 6th, spoke at rallies on January 5th, and was slated to speak at the January 6th rally at the Ellipse that directly preceded the violent attack on the Capitol. Before traveling to Washington, Mr. Stone promoted his attendance at the rallies and solicited support to pay for security through the website stopthesteal.org. While in Washington, Mr. Stone reportedly used members of the Oath Keepers as personal security guards, at least one of whom has been indicted for his involvement in the attack on the Capitol. Mr. Stone has made remarks that he was planning to ‘lead a march to the Capitol’ from the Ellipse rally.”

While the language of the Fifth Amendment appears to apply only to criminal cases, the Supreme Court has said that it extends to civil and other proceedings if the testimony can be used against the person in a criminal case. Stone’s use of the Fifth indicates his fear of incrimination, and it’ll be interesting to see how the Select Committee responds to his refusal to comply.
