RNC Speaker Says Police Should Profile Her Black Son: “Statistically, He’s More Likely To Commit A Violent Offense”
A speaker for the RNC says that when her son — who she describes as currently “adorable, perpetually tan-looking” — grows into a “large, intimidating-looking-maybe brown man,” it would be appropriate for police to profile him. Abby Johnson said her adopted son is “more likely to commit a violent offense” than her other sons — “brown-haired little Irish, very, very pale-skinned, white [boys].”
Abby Johnson is an anti-abortion activist, and is scheduled to speak on Tuesday at the RNC. Vice uncovered a deleted video in which Johnson explains why it would be reasonable for police to treat her Black son differently from her white sons.
Statistically, I look at our prison population and I see that there is a disproportionately high number of African-American males in our prison population for crimes, particularly for violent crimes. So statistically, when a police officer sees a brown man like my Jude walking down the road — as opposed to my white nerdy kids, my white nerdy men walking down the road — because of the statistics that he knows in his head, that these police officers know in their head, they’re going to know that statistically my brown son is more likely to commit a violent offense over my white sons.
Johnson’s commentary on her sons over the past few years has been odd, to say the least. She has asserted her adoption of a Black child as evidence against her being racist, and as evidence of her knowledge of racism. On the other hand, when pressed on describing him as “perpetually-tan” she said her son wasn’t Black, to the confusion of many.
Weird. Wonder why I adopted a black kid, then??

I have a black kid. I grew up in a segregated community. I know all about it.

My son is not black.

Abby’s son was black just five weeks before he wasn’t black. I too would like clarification on this.https://t.co/aqllLT8OVc

Johnson had described her adopted son as Black when asserting her position of expertise on racial justice, but then changed her description quite abruptly.
After protestors called for justice in the shooting of Jacob Blake, who is paralyzed after being shot in the back multiple times, Johnson tweeted to say that she wished Americans would stop defending criminals.
I long for the day when Americans stop defending criminals.

In her video, Johnson said she wouldn’t want her Black son to be treated by police. She added a qualifier, though.
But if he’s on more high alert with my brown son than he is with my white son, that doesn’t make me angry, because that’s just smart, because of statistics, okay?
