Right-wing pastor Shane Vaughn claimed on Thursday that “belief” in climate change is its own sinful religion and that climate scientists are “demonic demons from the cesspools of the abyss of Hell.”
Even though the empirical evidence that global warming is caused by human industrial activity is overwhelming and undeniable, Vaughn insisted that trusting science is an egregious affront to his Lord.
“Climate change is not scientific. It is a religion. It is an anti-Christ religion that has taken over the minds of the world. In today’s lesson, I’m going to prove to you from God’s word that it is a sin to believe in the ideology and the religion of climate change,” Vaughn said.
“They present this like it’s irrefutable, and every single person on Earth – nearly every single person – falls for it. Do you know why? Revelations 12 and 9. Satan has deceived the whole world. If you believe that mankind is causing climate change, you’re deceived by Satan,” he declared.
The Bible unambiguously instructs people to be responsible stewards of the Earth and contains numerous examples of the consequences of failing to do so. Here are some examples:
“Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.'”
“The land must not be sold permanently, because the land is mine and you are but aliens and my tenants. Throughout the country that you hold as a possession, you must provide for the redemption of the land.”
“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Woe to the shepherds of Israel who only take care of themselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock? You eat the curds, clothe yourselves with the wool, and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock. You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally.”
“The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the exalted of the earth languish. The earth is defiled by its people; they have disobeyed the laws, violated the statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore a curse consumes the earth; its people must bear their guilt. Therefore earth’s inhabitants are burned up, and very few are left.”
“I brought you into a fertile land to eat its fruit and rich produce. But you came and defiled my land and made my inheritance detestable.”
“The nations were angry, and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your saints and those who reverence your name, both small and great—and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”
Nevertheless, Vaughn continued, God is orchestrating global catastrophes to punish humanity for its sins.
“Do you know that the American West is withering as I speak to you right now? California is withering. Have you seen the levels of the lakes there? Have you been noti- have you seen the withering? Folks, wake up America! Return to your God. Submit to Yahweh. Obey his commandments. Keep his sabbath holy. Give him his tithe. Walk circumspectly before him. Oh, hallelujah. God causes these conditions. He controls the rain, the droughts, the famines, the floods. Do you know why we want to believe that climate change does this? It gives us the power,” he seethed. “You scientists from the pits of Hell, how dare you take from Yahweh the sovereign right over the weather that he alone claims and he alone controls, you demonic demons from the cesspools of the abyss of Hell!”
Vaughn’s circular logic is dizzying and he proved absolutely nothing. What we have here is a religious fanatic desperately attempting to convince himself and his audience that they can dodge accountability and deny reality. Unfortunately for everyone living on this planet, the bill for such arrogance is coming due.
