Right-Wing Columnist: Trump Is Not Running The Country
President Donald Trump’s fitness for office and competence has long been a subject of conversation, and with good reason.
He has not a clue about what the Constitution says, and his penchant for refusing to read books (and learning in general) makes him all the more dangerous at the helm of power.
That danger is increased a millionfold now that we are in the middle of a deadly global pandemic. However, one conservative columnist has a somewhat comforting theory: Trump is not running the United States government at all.
Jennifer Rubin is a conservative columnist for the Washington Post who has long been critical of Donald Trump’s (lack of) ability to lead the nation. In a Saturday missive, Rubin mused that not Trump, but people like House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Secretary of the Treasury Stephen Mnuchin are actually the ones getting things done. Rubin wrote:
“When House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced she had reached a deal with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, it predictably did not include that payroll tax. Increasingly, the way to get anything done is for Pelosi and Mnuchin to hammer out a reasonable compromise, let Mnuchin sell it to the president and then present it as a fait accompli to the Senate Republicans who have no ideas or legislation of their own, having become vassals of the president. This is how it went on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement trade negotiations.”
Speaker Pelosi’s attentions are, as they should be, focused on the coronavirus pandemic, and she wrote a letter to her counterparts in the government saying so. The message reads, in part:
“Today, the House is taking the next step to put Families First. We are proud to have reached an agreement with the Administration to resolve outstanding challenges, and now will soon pass the Families First Coronavirus Response Act.”
“This legislation is about testing, testing, testing. To stop the spread of the virus, we have secured free coronavirus testing for everyone who needs a test, including the uninsured. We cannot fight coronavirus effectively unless everyone in our country who needs to be tested can get their test free of charge.”
This is a relief, considering that just a few weeks ago, Vice President Mike Pence’s office could not even say that people without insurance would be able to get the COVID-19 test even if they need it.
This is the sort of thing people were afraid of when this malignant narcissist got into the White House. Now, it has come to pass.
