As is the case in many major metropolitan areas, New York has a city paper that leans left and a city paper that leans right. For Manhattan, the liberal leaning paper is the New York Daily News and the conservative leaning paper is the New York Post.
The Post is owned by Australian billionaire Rupert Murdoch, who also owns Fox News. Murdoch is a Trump supporter who reportedly killed the Stormy Daniels story after it was uncovered by a Fox News reporter. The billionaire, however, allowed the Post to release an editorial calling for a ban on assault weapons.
The editorial board addressed the President, “God save us all, sir. People all across the nation are scared; many feel like the country is spinning out of control. They’re looking to their leaders for more than prayers.”
The paper continues by claiming that this is a bi-partisan issue. “President Trump, you are positioned to assuage that fear,” they write. “On gun control, you are a pragmatic centrist, someone who knows there is a vast majority of Americans who are not to the extreme left or right on this issue. They just want the killings to stop.”
The post argues, “Our Founding Fathers gave us the right to bear arms in a time of muskets. They did not foresee a time when one 21-year-old could kill 20 people in the span of minutes thanks to poisonous beliefs and an assault weapon.” They then close, “It does not have to be this way. It should not have to be this way. Mr. President, do something — help America live without fear.”
President Trump has promised to do something to help stem the killing. One of those ideas reportedly ties immigration reform and gun control together.
