Republican Senator From NC Calls Out Madison Cawthorn’s Russian Propaganda

Even fellow Republicans from his own state are running out of patience with Representative Madison Cawthorn as he spouts conspiracies and propaganda that promote Vladimir Putin’s causes.

Senator Thom Tillis may share a political party and a state with Madison Cawthorn, but that doesn’t mean he supports the younger elected official’s ideals. Cawthorn has really been drumming up negative publicity for himself during his time in Congress, from supporting insurrectionists, to getting caught trying to take a firearm on a plane, to his recent traffic violations, but it was his decision to make himself valuable to Russian propaganda networks that finally elicited a response from Tillis.
As previously reported, Cawthorn called Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a “thug” and labeled his government “evil,” declared that he’d prefer a U.S. President who would tweet bomb threats, and then wondered why stating “I don’t stand with Ukraine” would be seen as offensive.
The North Carolina Republican Party has already spoken out about his behavior, but on Thursday, following a report from NBC foreign correspondent Raf Sanchez that included video clips of Cawthorn being played on Russian state media, Tillis himself weighed in.

“If your comments are being replayed over and over by Russian state propaganda outlets…” the Senator mused, electing not to complete the thought, but leaving it dangling for constituents to draw their own conclusions instead. Even so, it’s a significant call-out from a home state Republican for Cawthorn, and may not bode well for his further political aspirations.
