Republican “Doc Caucus” Records PSA Urging Vaccinations

A group of Republican lawmakers has stepped up while former president Donald Trump refuses to and has recorded a video public service announcement encouraging Americans to get a coronavirus vaccine.

The senators and congressmen, all of whom have medical degrees, produced the two-minute PSA to try to assure the skeptical that the vaccines are both safe and effective. The GOP lawmakers, some of whom are wearing white lab coats, clearly are directing their message to Republicans who have refused to get vaccinated.

Rep. Greg Murphy (N.C.) begins, “It’s obvious to me from a medical standpoint the only way to protect ourselves and your loved ones,” and Rep. Larry Bucshon (Ind.) finishes the sentence, “and to end the government’s restrictions on our freedoms, is to take action and get the vaccine.”

Many of those appearing in the ad are solid Trump loyalists and heaped praise on Operation Warp Speed. “The process was rigorous and transparent and a process that I personally followed very, very closely,” says Rep. Brian Babin (Tex.). Rep. Andy Harris (Md.) and Rep. Michael Burgess of Texas say, “The FDA did not skip any steps. Instead, they cut bureaucratic red tape, not corners. They got the job done in record time.”

Murphy concludes: “I hope you’ll join me in choosing to get the vaccine so that we can throw away our masks and live life as free as we did before.”

In recent days two of Trump’s senior advisers have advocated for Trump to put out a similar PSA aimed at vaccine-skeptical Republicans but there’s not indication that the twice-impeached, one-term former president is interested in doing anything to encourage his loyal base to get the life-saving vaccine.
