Former CIA officer and U.S. Representative Will Hurd revealed on Thursday in an op-ed that President Trump “actively participated in a Russian disinformation campaign” while meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki this week.
In an op-ed for the New York Times, Hurd held back no punches, writing:
“Over the course of my career as an undercover officer in the C.I.A., I saw Russian intelligence manipulate many people. I never thought I would see the day when an American president would be one of them.”
Hurd then reminded American voters that Russia is an American adversary and not an ally.
“Somehow many Americans have forgotten that Russia is our adversary, not our ally…For more than a decade, Russia has meddled in elections around the world, supported brutal dictators and invaded sovereign nations — all to the detriment of United States interests.”
Hurd also warns that Russia is still engaged in an active disinformation campaign that is “working” against the American people and shows no sign of slowing anytime soon.
Further, the Representative worries that without action being taken, “we risk losing further credibility in international negotiations with both our friends and foes on critical trade deals, military alliances and nuclear arms.”
Hurd’s op-ed, which can be read in its entirety HERE, highlights the troubling moves Donald Trump has made from the time of his election campaign through his summit with Vladimir Putin in which the two world leaders met behind closed doors for much of their discussion.
