Prior to the 2020 election, Donald Trump had lawyers on call ready to overturn the results. Unfortunately for the former president, Joe Biden beat him soundly and left no doubt. The reputable firms lined up by the GOP backed out of fighting the results.
So Trump was left with his “Elite Strikeforce Team.” Rudy Giuliani, of course, consistently humiliated himself during the election fight and Jenna Ellis wasn’t much better. Sidney Powell, though, pushed the craziest conspiracy theories of them all.
Powell made strange claims about Hugo Chavez and Venezuela and especially voting machines. And in order to keep her election fight going, she created a fundraising arm called Defending the Republic. That fundraising arm is now under investigation by the state of Florida.
Activist Grant Stern reports, “Public records reveal an ongoing administrative complaint tied to Powell against Defending The Republic PAC, Inc. and ‘Defending The Republic’, a Florida entity or a Texas for-profit company associated with the former Trump lawyer.”
Stern notes that an investigative subpoena has been issued in an attempt to find the true owner of Powell’s website. The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has yet to receive an answer.
As of now, the penalty for the case could be up to a $5,000 fine. But Stern also writes, “Florida law makes it a 3rd-degree felony to knowingly violate the requirement to register before making charitable donation solicitations in the state. The maximum penalty for that crime is 5 years in prison.”
