Mitt Romney’s vote to remove Donald Trump not only enraged the President, it also shone a spotlight on a number of Republican senate incumbents. Susan Collins of Maine, Martha McSally or Arizona, Cory Gardner of Colorado and Thom Tillis of North Carolina are all up for reelection in 2020. Each of their states are becoming increasingly blue.
Some segments of the GOP are particularly worried about Tillis’ reelection bid in North Carolina. According to CNN, a political action group with Republican ties are attempting to prop up one of Tillis’ potential opponents.
The Democratic primary race for Tillis’ senate seat will likely come down to Erica Smith or Cal Cunningham. To this point, Cunningham has dramatically outraised Smith.
The Republican PAC, Faith and Power, recently spent a fair amount of money running ads that support Smith. The ads reportedly cost $1.56 million.
The voiceover during the commercial spots read, “Who’s the Democrat for US Senate endorsed by progressives and unions? Erica Smith. Who’s got the courage to vote for ‘Medicare for All’? Erica Smith. The number one supporter of the Green New Deal? Erica Smith again.”
Smith is seen as a more progressive candidate than her opponent Cunningham. CNN reports, “The winner of the Democratic primary will face Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, who may prefer to run against Smith.”
