Report: Chris Christie Still Wants to Be President

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is seriously mulling a run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, Axios reported on Wednesday.

Christie was considered a GOP frontrunner in the early days of the 2016 election cycle, however, he quit the race in February of that year after then-candidate and future President Donald Trump’s bombastic campaign stole the party’s thunder.

Christie “has told friends that he’d be the only person in the 2024 field with executive experience who has run a presidential race before,” the outlet wrote, citing three people close to the former governor.

“That’s a clear shot at one potential rival, Florida Govenor Ron DeSantis [R], who’s enjoying a surge of popularity from Republican voters for his handling of COVID-19 and his sparring with the media but hasn’t yet endured the scrutiny of a presidential bid,” noted Axios.

It added that Christie sees himself as a formidable contender to take on President Joe Biden:

Christie could run on a reputation for toughness that appeals to Trump’s base minus the former president’s recklessness, said one source. Another said he has a mix of combativeness and charisma that Republicans are looking for to take on President Biden and Democrats.

He has potential crossover appeal to blue-collar and suburban right-of-center voters.

And his experience as a former federal prosecutor could help distinguish him in debates and prepare for a primary contest in which there may be less of a premium on ad-libbing than in 2016.

Trump, meanwhile, has remained coy over what his potential 2024 plans are. On Monday, he told Fox News propagandist Sean Hannity that even though serving as president was “traumatic,” he enjoyed the job.

“I miss the most, helping people. That’s why I did it. Look, this has been very traumatic. I had a great life, great company, great business, no problems and now all I do is, people go after you. It’s vicious, it’s horrible but you know what? I loved doing it because I helped people. And I’ve helped them more than any president,” Trump proclaimed.
