Lauren Boebert sure does like to attract attention to herself. Since being elected in 2020, the 34-year-old Republican freshman congresswoman from Colorado has bragged about carrying a gun in Washington, D.C., tried to stop certification of President Joe Biden election win over Donald Trump, denied the seriousness of the coronavirus pandemic and become one of the loudest sycophants for Trump in Congress.
What she hasn’t done, according to many Colorado voters, is represent them in Washington. Politico reporter Jennifer Oldham spoke with a number of voters in Pueblo, which is the largest city in Boebert’s district, who quickly have become disenchanted with her.
“People here feel Boebert doesn’t represent their values,” says Colorado state Senate President Leroy Garcia, a Pueblo Democrat who is popular with voters in both parties. “There is a lot of passion around seeing her removed.”
A number of Pueblo residents, some who voted for Boebert, say they’re angry that she appears to have spent more time headlining GOP fundraisers than hosting public meetings to learn of their concerns.Bri Buentello, an educator and former Democratic state legislator, has this review of Boebert’s first six months in office. “As far as I can tell, we are paying her $180,000 a year for her to tweet and go on Fox News. The job she’s doing is fundamentally disconnected from [the district] and our needs.”
Sol Sandoval, who now intends to run against her for congress, sums her up this way. “When I think of Lauren Boebert, I think of that expression ‘all hat and no cattle,'” Sandoval explained. “When she had the opportunity to support stimulus funding, she chose Trump over us.”
Gus Garcia, a political independent who also voted for Biden, said, “I thought Lauren would be a great representative for small business owners because she owns a small business, and she came from a humble lifestyle. But she has been so terribly disappointing. I am humiliated and embarrassed when she speaks on the House floor. She screams all the time, and she seems to have affiliated herself with white supremacists.”
