Religious Zealot Lawmaker Refuses to Wear Face Mask
An Ohio GOP lawmaker says that he
because God doesn’t wear one. Republican Ohio State Rep. Nino Vitale, who has been a big opponent of stay-at-home orders is refusing to wear a face mask in public. He says that wearing a mask goes against, “Judeo-Christian Principles.” Tyler Buchanan, an Ohio Capital Journal reporter, pointed out the lawmaker’s lengthy Facebook post, in which, Vitale raged against orders to wear face masks when out in public. He claimed the orders violated God’s teaching.
“This is the greatest nation on earth founded on Judeo-Christian Principles,” Vitale wrote. “One of those principles is that we are all created in the image and likeness of God. That image is seen the most by our faces. I will not wear a mask,” Vitale said in his post. Then, Vitale irresponsibly urged his followers to ignore the advice of Ohio Health Director Amy Acton, who has faced many conservative critics in Ohio for calling for stay-at-home orders. This criticism comes during a pandemic that has killed 67,000 Americans over the course of two months.
“It is time to do what Preble County did, ignore the unelected Dr. Acton’s orders, open your counties now before it’s too late,” he wrote. “This is not based on logic, this is based on fear and propaganda and every statistical, data-driven study done in the last 2 weeks says death counts are low, the models were wrong, and this is more like the flu.” Views like this have proven to be dangerous and increase the likely hood of infection. We can only hope that people listen to the experts.
