Donald Trump had a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday. According to the White House, they discussed the Mueller report. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said of the conversation to the press:
“It was discussed, essentially in the context that it’s over and there was no collusion, which I’m pretty sure both leaders were very well aware of long before this call took place.”
Of course, this is going to cause a lot of justifiable speculation, considering the fact that Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III was appointed to investigate allegations that the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government in order to tip the 2016 presidential election in Trump’s favor.
While the report did not say that there was direct evidence of a conspiracy between the campaign and the Russian government to influence the 2016 election, there have been allegations of obstruction of justice with regards to the conduct of the investigation. There are also ongoing investigations surrounding the matter in the Democratically controlled House of Representatives. The White House and President Trump himself insist that the report exonerates Trump and members of his campaign. This is not conclusive, though.
The fact that Trump is talking to Putin about this will be of great interest to the American public. Perhaps either the House Oversight Committee, the Intelligence Committee, or the Judiciary Committee will subpoena phone transcripts from any interpreters on the phone. That way, Congress can do its due diligence and the American people have the truth. After all, the integrity of the very basis of our democracy – our elections – is at stake here.
