The President of the United States again retweeted a lie about his opponent in the upcoming election. Donald Trump’s campaign continues to paint Biden as a Schrodinger’s candidate, simultaneously a brilliant debater who knocks out rows of opponents on the stage, and unable to answer a question or speak in a complete sentence. In this current attack, Biden is falsely accused of using a teleprompter to answer questions in an interview, though he was actually answering questions from viewers on the screen.
Eric Trump posted a video clipped to misleadingly portray Joe Biden as unable to answer a question without a teleprompter. CNN reporter Daniel Dale corrected the claim, showing images demonstrating the truth about the exchange. However, a senior advisor for Donald Trump’s campaign shared the clip, with further editorialization to falsely suggest that Biden was reading from the screen, then the president himself shared the lie.

The CNN fact check noted that this was actually a clip of Joe Biden answering questions from Telemundo viewers, and was one more in a string of deceptively altered video clips shared by the Trump campaign.
The interview can be seen below.
Biden is told, “When we announced that we were going to be speaking with you, Telemundo viewers were interested in asking you questions.”
“Okay, I’m looking here?” he asks, as a Hispanic woman appears on the screen and begins to ask her question, in Spanish.
Biden keeps his eyes on the screen as the question, about the record of deportation under the Obama administration, is asked and interpreted, then as he begins to answer, saying, as can be seen in the shorter clip, that he’ll put a moratorium on deportations for the first 100 days he’s in office. The interviewer asks him for clarification, and he turns to respond, before turning back to the questioner on-screen.
“I lost that line,” he says, as the screen apparently cuts out, but continues to answer the question, going on to discuss DACA, circumstances under which it’s appropriate to resort to deportation, and the family separation policy.
Still, Trump campaign senior advisor Jason Miller reshared the deceptively edited clip, saying, “He’s not even pretending to look at the interviewer!”

Then, the incumbent President of the United States amplified a lie about his political opponent, as can be seen in the screenshot of his retweet below.
Though Eric Trump, Jason Miller, and Donald Trump have all shared the clip suggesting that Biden isn’t capable of answering a question without a teleprompter, and can’t even look away from prepared answers to face an interviewer, the campaign has been saying the opposite. Only yesterday, Trump’s Communications Director, Tim Murtaugh, said he expected a “tuned-in” Joe Biden, who “debated a whole crowd of opponents, 11 times, and he won, and “bested two dozen Democrat challengers.”
