Poll Shows Republicans Increasingly Believe Trump Lied About Election — But They Still Support Him

The House Select Committee formed to investigate the January 6th attack has been, in at least one sense, quite effective, a new poll suggests. Unfortunately, just showing the world the evidence may not be enough — the former president never quite seems to run out of supporters, no matter how clear the facts are.

Morning Consult and Politico released data from a new poll, showing that since Cassidy Hutchinson’s testimony to the January 6th Committee, there has been an uptick in the number of Republicans who believe Donald Trump lied about the 2020 election, and tried to overturn it.

“Compared with a survey conducted June 24-26, the shares of Republicans who said Trump misled people about the 2020 election outcome (up 5 percentage points to 30%), attempted to overturn the 2020 result (up 5 points to 45%) and claimed without evidence that the last presidential contest was fraudulent (up 7 points to 44%) all increased in the wake of Hutchinson’s testimony.”

There’s no doubt Hutchinson’s testimony was effective and impactful. The response from Trump and allies, attacking and trying to discredit her, suggests they felt the impact, too.

However, just because voters may believe the former president lied, tried to overthrow a fair election, and claimed fraud without any evidence, doesn’t mean they’ve given up on him. The same polling finds that 66% of Republicans think Trump should run again, and more than half say they’d back him in a Republican primary. Whether or not he runs again, more than half think he should have a “major role” in the party.
