Pennsylvania’s Democratic Attorney General Announces Gubernatorial Bid

Pennsylvania’s Democratic Attorney General Josh Shapiro on Wednesday announced his candidacy for the commonwealth’s governorship to succeed incumbent Democrat Tom Wolf. Shapiro is expected to easily win his party’s nomination to face off against a crowded field of Republican primary hopefuls in next year’s gubernatorial election.

“I’ve spent my life taking on the big and powerful on behalf of those who’ve been wronged, citizens who’ve been left out, and communities that have fallen behind. I understand people feel like our politics are divided and broken right now, but we can’t just take our ball and go home. There’s too much on the line. We all have a responsibility to show up, to stand up, and to fight for what’s right,” Shapiro said in a video that was posted to Twitter.

Republicans want to “lead us down a dark path, undermine free and fair elections, strip away voting rights and permanently divide us,” Shapiro said.

“I will always fight to protect voting rights,” he added. “As governor, I’ll stay in the game no matter what, and together we’ll build a future we can all believe in.”

Shapiro made a name for himself nationally in 2018 when he exposed decades of sexual abuse that was covered up by the Catholic Church.

Since then, he began earning additional political capital “when he publicly, and then representing Wolf’s administration, repeatedly pushed back against President Donald Trump’s baseless claims of election fraud in the state,” The Philadelphia Inquirer noted. “Shapiro filed a lawsuit last month seeking to block a Senate GOP subpoena that demanded millions of voter records from the Wolf administration. The case is pending.”

Speaking with supporters in Pittsburg on Wednesday, Shapiro blasted Republicans for their embrace of Trump and their ongoing attacks on democracy.

“Instead they’re peddling the big lie. They’re not thinking about you,” he said. “They’re not thinking about any of you. Instead, they’re focused on a taxpayer-funded audit that would jeopardize the private, personal information of nine million Pennsylvania voters.”

Meanwhile, Chris Gustafson, a spokesman for the Republican Governors Association, offered a predictably paltry rebuttal.

“Throughout the pandemic, Josh Shapiro has stood by Tom Wolf and his failed Covid policies that endangered Pennsylvania seniors, crushed the economy, and left the Keystone State with an unemployment rate well above the national average,” said Gustafson. “It’s no wonder Shapiro is the Democrats’ hand-picked candidate. Who else will carry on the failed policies that have left the commonwealth behind? Voters are eager for change and look forward to electing a Republican governor next fall.”
