Pence: There’s Been “Irresponsible Rhetoric” Downplaying the Coronavirus
When COVID-19 started to have an impact on American life, Donald Trump appointed Mike Pence to be the “Coronavirus Czar.” The Vice President’s previous experience overseeing a public health crisis had not gone well.
Still, Pence has taken the position head on, even receiving praise from Democratic Governors Jay Inslee (WA) and Gavin Newsom (CA). He has also been contradicted at times by the President. During an interview with Savannah Guthrie, Pence bemoaned “irresponsible rhetoric” about the seriousness of the epidemic.
The NBC host had specifically asked about a direct quote from the President. On Monday, Trump claimed the, “fake news media and their partner, the Democrat Party, is doing everything to inflame the coronavirus situation.”
Pence responded, “There’s been some irresponsible rhetoric, but the American people should know President Trump has no higher priority than the health and safety and well being of the people of this country.”
Trump patted himself on the back Wednesday night for his response to the pandemic. “This is the most aggressive and comprehensive effort to confront a foreign virus in modern history,” he told the nation. ” am confident that by counting and continuing to take these tough measures, we will significantly reduce the threat to our citizens, and we will ultimately and expeditiously defeat this virus.”
