“Pathetic!” Donald Trump Reacts To Dr. Birx’s Warnings On Pandemic Response

Monday morning Donald Trump lashed out at Dr. Deborah Birx, who said this weekend that the country is in a “new phase” of the pandemic, that anyone who may have been exposed needs to be tested, and that COVID-19 is now “extraordinarily widespread.” The president blamed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for speaking out about Birx’s lavishing of praise on Trump, saying Birx then “took the bait” and attacked the Trump administration.

When asked about the Trump administration’s handling of the pandemic, Birx’s response to CNN was evasive, suggesting that the administration had taken steps to “reset the response” months ago. However, she also said that schools should consider distance learning where there are 5% positive cases, and that outbreaks are widespread, everywhere, in rural areas as well as cities. (The Trump administration previously thought that the virus might do most of its damage in areas that would primarily affect Democratic voters.)

However, Donald Trump’s Monday morning tweet suggests he felt attacked. “Deborah took the bait & hit us. Pathetic!”

Nancy Pelosi was asked on ABC‘s This Week about comments she’d allegedly made calling Birx “the worst” and accusing her of spreading disinformation. She responded by saying that she has no confidence in the Trump administration, nor in Birx as Trump’s appointee.

As VOX reported at the time, Dr. Deborah Birx praised Donald Trump in March, saying “He’s been so attentive to the scientific literature and the details and the data. I think his ability to analyze and integrate data that comes out of his long history in business has really been a real benefit during these discussions about medical issues.”
