Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is voicing his disgust over how U.S. President Donald J. Trump has handled peace talks in the Middle East.
Appearing in front of the Palestinian Central Council, Abbas openly criticized President Trump over his handling of the Palestinian people in general. Last month, to the shock of U.S. allies throughout the world, the 45th POTUS recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
“We told Trump we will not accept his project, the ‘deal of the century,’ which has become the ‘slap of the century,’” Abbas said.
Directly addressing Trump, he added, “shame on you” for claiming that the Palestinians refuse to negotiate. Abbas said the Palestinian government and its people remain fully committed to negotiating peace in the region.
Abbas believes the White House is preparing an unfair negotiation that will not be accepted by his governing body. “We do not take instructions from anyone, and say ‘no’ to anyone if it is about our destiny, our cause, our country and our people. … 1,000 times no,” Abbas said.
While President Trump’s recent actions have been obviously applauded by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Palestinian people have said in no uncertain terms that the POTUS has destroyed his credibility as a Mideast peace broker.
