O’Rourke and Buttigieg Spar Over Gun Control

The recent shooting in El Paso has spurred Presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke to take a strong line on gun control. During Thursday nights debates, the former congressman reiterated his plan to strip gun owners of AR-15’s and AK-47’s.

Pete Buttigieg, another Democratic contender and the Mayor of South Bend, took issue with O’Rourke’s aggressive plan. O’Rourke responded to Buttigieg’s complaints by saying his kind of thinking in the reason the for the current lack of gun control.

The former Texas congressman said during the debates, “Hell, yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47.” He continued, “If the high-impact, high-velocity round, when it hits your body, shreds everything inside of your body because it was designed to do that so that you would bleed to death on a battlefield … when we see that being used against children.”

Buttigieg was asked about O’Rourke’s comments while speaking with CNN’s Jake Tapper. He told the host, “When even this president and even Mitch McConnell are at least pretending to be open to reforms, we know that we have a moment on our hands. Let’s make the most of it and get these things done.”

O’Rourke took exception to Buttigieg’s comments and shared video of the interview. He tweeted, “Leaving millions of weapons of war on the streets because Trump and McConnell are “at least pretending to be open to reforms”? That calculation and fear is what got us here in the first place. Let’s have the courage to say what we believe and fight for it.”
