Oprah Winfrey is so wildly popular that she can have a massive impact on people’s lives. A nomination to her book club once essentially guaranteed that the title would become a best seller. And for Dr. Mehmet Oz, her support meant that he became the host of a widely watched show.
Oz is now attempting to parlay his celebrity into one of the nation’s 100 senate seats. However, Winfrey didn’t endorse him when recently asked about his candidacy.
“One of the great things about our democracy is that every citizen can decide to run for public office,” Winfrey said in a statement to New York Magazine. “Mehmet Oz has made that decision. And now it’s up to the residents of Pennsylvania to decide who will represent them.”
While Oz could certainly win the seat without Winfrey’s support, this lack of an endorsement speaks volumes. Winfrey has supported Liberal candidates in the past. She made clear her support for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012.
Winfrey also made it clear that she wasn’t a fan of Donald Trump. The former president lamented, “Oprah, when she ended her show, had the five most important people. I assume. Her last week. Remember her last week. Well I was on her full show in the last week. I think they are trying the burn the tape.”
