At the moment, two Democratic lawmakers are standing in the way of expanded voting rights. That doesn’t mean, though, that they aren’t taking heat for doing so. A letter about the matter was recently sent to Joe Manchin and was signed by numerous legendary West Virginia sports figures.
Krysten Sinema is the other Democrat who refuses to sidestep the filibuster to expand voting rights. One of the Arizona Democrat’s most prominent donors is fighting back. Emily’s List, an organization that donates to female lawmakers who protect abortion rights, threatened to stop funding Sinema unless she changes her stance.
Laphonza Butler, the president of the organization explained in a statement, “Understanding that access to the ballot box and confidence in election results are critical to our work and our country, we have joined with many others to impress upon Senator Sinema the importance of the pending voting rights legislation in the Senate. So far those concerns have not been addressed.”

The statement continued, “Right now, Senator Sinema’s decision to reject the voices of allies, partners and constituents who believe the importance of voting rights outweighs that of an arcane process means she will find herself standing alone in the next election.”
Sinema has yet to respond to the statement from Emily’s List.
