Oklahoma State Star Furious Over Coach’s OAN shirt

Oklahoma State University player Chuba Hubbard says that Coach Mike Gundy’s open support and promotion of OAN is a deal-breaker. “I will not be doing anything with Oklahoma State until things CHANGE,” the running back tweeted Monday.

CBS Sports writer Kyle Boone tweeted a screenshot Monday morning of a social media post, which showed Gundy wearing a t-shirt promoting OAN. For context, OAN, or One America News, which Washington Post has referred to as “the most fervently pro-Trump news network,” once asked if Trump would consider pardoning President Obama for illegal wiretapping (clip here at CSPAN). It should be noted that Obama has not been charged with any such crime.

Boone tweeted further to add context, making it clear that this isn’t a random shirt to the coach — he’s clearly familiar with the network, and has praised it in the past, actually saying that the network reports news without opinion or commentary.

For at least one football player, this was enough. He tweeted saying that he won’t stand for this, and that he won’t participate in anything with Oklahoma State until there’s a change.

Hubbard has been tweeting appreciation of the protests against police violence, specifically supporting protests in his native Canada.

Hubbard chose to stay with OSU for the 2020 season rather than leaving for an NFL spot, which the school’s Cowboys Ride For Free blog notes could give him a chance at the all-time rushing record for the school. If his coach’s promotion of a right-wing news network keeps Chuba Hubbard off the field, though, that obviously changes things.
