Officer Sicknick’s Mother To Trump: “How Can You Be So Uncaring?”
After six months spent grieving his death in private, the mother and partner of fallen U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick now are letting the world know exactly what they think of the U.S. senators and former president who continue to ignore their loved one’s death as a result of the Jan. 6 insurrection.
Last week Gladys Sicknick and Sandra Garza, Brian Sicknick’s longtime partner, went door-to-door on Capitol Hill to lobby Republican senators to support the creation of an independent commission to investigate deadly riot that killed five people and injured 140 police officers who attempted to defend the Capitol. The Senate rejected that bill.
Today, in a new interview with CBS News, the two women held little back in their criticism of lawmakers.
“I’m disgusted that the, that decided to vote no. It’s a spit in the face to Brian, it’s a spit in the face to all the officers that were there that day,” Garza said. She also said the senators who did not even show up for the vote committed a “dereliction of duty.”
The two also blasted twice-impeached former president Donald Trump for ignoring Officer Sicknick’s death.
“He knew that Brian was devoted to him, and he did not once reach out to me, to Gladys, he didn’t even send a letter of condolences. He did absolutely nothing. And so, you know, it’s very upsetting,, you know, that he’s not — and I would meet with him, actually. I would. I would meet with him,” she said.
Asked what she would say to the former president, Garza said she would ask why he never reached out.
“And I would ask him why he failed all law enforcement that day. You know, he has an opportunity to turn this around. You know, if he’s really going to back the blue, then back it up with your actions,” Garza said.
Sicknick added, “He just watched it on television like it was a soap opera. I don’t understand it. How can you be so uncaring?
