In a statement on Thursday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made declarations about his willingness to escalate any conflict with South Korea or the United States, and to engage with nuclear weapons. He warned the U.S. about “demonizing” his country to defend “hostile policies.”

NPR reports that Kim Jong Un was speaking to a group of veterans, promoting unity within the country, when he issued statements about hostility with South Korea and with the United States.
“Our armed forces are completely prepared to respond to any crisis, and our country’s nuclear war deterrent is also ready to mobilize its absolute power dutifully, exactly and swiftly in accordance with its mission,” Kim reportedly said.
He also asserted in his speech that the United States sets a double standard by holding regular military drills, but deeming North Korea’s missile tests — which he describes as ‘routine military activities’ — as a display of hostility.
UPI reports that the speech on what North Korea calls Victory Day, the anniversary of armistice that marked the end of the Korean War, was Kim’s first public appearance in nearly three weeks, and was accompanied by celebratory fireworks and fighter jet flyovers.
The Council on Foreign Relations describes North Korea’s military capacity as potentially posessing enough material for as many as 100 nuclear weapons, as well as presumed posession of both biological and chemical weapons. The country has already tested missiles that could be used in a nuclear strike on the United States.
