NH Labor Party Pushes Child Labor & Nobody Is Having It

The two-party system is flawed, but every now and then a third party comes up with a proposal so untenable that it really drives home why no third party has ever become a serious national challenge to the two current major parties. It’s no surprise when that idea arises from the Libertarian Party.

In this case, the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire pushed out an idea on their official blue-checkmark Twitter account that even Libertarians are saying is just no good: bringing back child labor.

“Children will learn more on a job site than in school,” the group tweeted out, following that with an assertion that the “right” for children to join the job market should be decided state by state, and a link to a story about labor shortage, with a declaration that child labor laws aren’t really protecting kids from exploitation, but keeping teens from gainful end educational employment. “Federal minimum work ages are unconstitutional,” they declared.

Former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, a Libertarian who was the party’s Presidential candidate in 2016, was one of the first to jump in with a resounding NO.

Plenty of others joined in, with the predominant sentiment that the idea was ridiculous and outrageous. They shared a lot of reminders of just how bad child labor really was before legislation placed limits and controls.

For plenty of people, this tweet exemplified exactly what they don’t like about the Libertarian Party — even for some who consider themselves Libertarians.

The Libertarian Party of Colorado was willing to lean in to the idea, though.

In their defense, the Libertarian Party of New Hampshire retweeted people comparing the outlawing of child labor to slavery, and reminiscing about doing odd jobs as a kid, and suggested that Democrats would send “armed thugs” to stop a kid from washing a neighbor’s car.
