NH GOP Senate Hopeful Calls For Universities to Ban Chinese Students
While many lawmakers are looking for medical solutions to the COVID-19 Pandemic, others are looking to assign blame. The GOP has a clear target in mind, the Chinese. This movement has been led by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who claims the virus originated in a Chinese lab.
Candidates looking to win seats in November are now making this Chinese blame game for of their election strategy. Corky Messner, who is vying for the GOP nomination for the New Hampshire senate, has taken it a step further. Messner has called on American Universities to ban Chinese students.
The senate hopeful made the comments during a virtual town hall on Thursday. He told viewers, “The Chinese Communist Party must be held accountable for the damages they have caused the world as a result of their gross negligence, conduct ― and I might even argue that it was criminally negligent conduct.”
Messner continued, “We also have to, I think, not allow Chinese students to attend American universities, because they come here and they become educated, and they go back with our intellectual property. The United States can no longer be the research and development arm for the Chinese Communist Party. It’s just not acceptable.”
This is not a novel idea for the GOP. In April, Arkansas senator Tom Cotton suggested that Chinese students shouldn’t be allowed to study STEM. He told Fox News, “I have little doubt that the Chinese intelligence services are actively trying to steal America’s intellectual property as it relates to the virus that they unleashed on the world, because, of course, they want to be the country that claims credit for finding those drugs or finding a vaccine, and then use it as leverage against the rest of the world.”
