Donald Trump really wants credit for Roe vs. Wade being overturned but he also knows that the move wasn't popular with a large swath of voters. So on Tuesday, the former President decided to take the middle ground by punting the decision on abortion to states.
Many Conservatives were deeply unhappy with Trump's decision, and people like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lindsey Graham were even willing to complain publicly. Newt Gingrich attempted to give Trump some cover during a recent appearance on Fox News.
Gingrich opined, "I thought what he did, his statement was exactly right. People who read it carefully who read carefully and think about it — we are a country that has to have this conversation."
The former Speaker of the House continued:
"Most of the right to life leaders understand exactly what Trump is trying to do. He’s trying to reach the largest possible number of babies saved. He's trying to create the best possible environment in the current culture and in the current laws. And he's doing it in a way that is extraordinarily pro-life without alienating people with the kind of fear mongering that the Democrats have."
Trump is in somewhat of a tough spot. He knows that this is a losing issue, but he still has to placate the Evangelicals in his base.
