Newly Released Tapes Reveal Boebert Was Confronted By GOP Colleague Over Jan 6th Tweets

Audio recordings obtained by New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns while researching their book This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden, and the Battle for America’s Future reveal private discussions among Congressional Republicans and others connected to Donald Trump in the days after the January 6th Capitol insurrection.

One such exchange points to an already fracturing party choosing sides between Trump and the truth of what happened when his supporters overran the Capitol in an attempt to stop Congress from certifying Joe Biden as President. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) had infamously tweeted the movements of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, whom she’d already been targeting during her first weeks in her new role. During a meeting led by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA) criticized Boebert for her tweets that could have endangered the Speaker’s safety. Herrera Beutler was with McCarthy in his office on January 6th when he called Trump and asked him to tell the crowd to stop attacking the building and go home. Trump infamously replied, “Well Kevin, I guess these people care more about the election than you do.”

The exchange between Boebert and Herrera Beutler may not be memed as much, but Boebert’s tweets about Speaker Pelosi have been shown again and again as an example of some members of Congress potentially being in on the plot (Boebert also gave her mother and their friends a tour of the Capitol on January 5th).

The book quotes the conversation: “Is it true that you were live-tweeting from the floor our location to the people on the outside as we were being attacked, Lauren?” Beutler asked. “Umm, yes,” Boebert admitted. “Those tweets did go out and that was something that was live and public information. It was broadcast live.”

You can hear the anger in Herrera Beutler’s voice as she tells Boebert, “So don’t ask us about security if you’re telling the attackers where we’re at.” You can also hear Boebert pronounce C-SPAN as “C-SPANNED.”
