New U.S. COVID-19 Daily Case Rates Plunge, But 1000s Are Still Dying From COVID Every Day

While new Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations keep falling, more than 2,000 Americans are still dying every day from Covid-19. And despite the fact that most Americans — about 65% — have been fully vaccinated, only 28% have received a booster dose, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The US is now averaging 136,190 new Covid-19 cases a day, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. That’s a 44% plunge from last week. New Covid-19 cases have plummeted to about one-sixth of the peak of more than 800,000 cases per day a month ago. But Covid-19 hospitalizations are also declining, with 75,032 patients currently hospitalized with Covid-19, according to data from the US Department of Health and Human Services. That’s a 25% drop from last week.

If the US had a similar Covid death rate as Japan, about 850,000 more Americans would be alive today.

๐งตThe US has suffered 900,000 deaths from Covid, the highest figure of any nation; and has the highest death rate of any wealthy country, with half of the deaths occurring since vaccines became available. The US has never responded to Covid in a sustained way as a unified nation. pic.twitter.com/Y216Y8T7Of

New Covid-19 deaths often happen weeks after infection, making deaths a lagging indicator. And the pace of new vaccinations and booster shots given has dropped to among the slowest it’s ever been since they were introduced.
Booster update:
– CDC data shows more than 90 million booster shots administered
– We estimate over two-thirds of all eligible adults and over 80% of all eligible seniors have received a booster shot
– A majority of boosters in the last 2 months have gone to people of color— The White House (@WhiteHouse) February 9, 2022
