Since he was first elected to congress in 2011, Trey Gowdy was a constant presence on cable news. The former South Carolina lawmaker ran the House Benghazi Committee and was the Chair of the House Oversight Committee from 2017-2019. He left his political career in January of 2019 to concentrate on law.
One of his first jobs since returning to law will be helping to defend Donald Trump against impeachment. Trump’s hiring of Gowdy has drawn mixed reviews among conservatives and the President said he won’t be able to join his team right away.
Victoria Toensing, a lawyer who works along side Rudy Giuliani expressed disbelief at the move. She reportedly said, “Trey Gowdy doesn’t know s***.”
Toensing continued, “He’s not on the team. Trey Gowdy is not on the team. Who told you Trey Gowdy? Not to my knowledge, not to Rudy’s knowledge, not Joe’s (DeGenova) knowledge. I have to check that with Rudy because that would be a joke, because we all don’t think much of him. Are you kidding? … Trey is a joke among us.”
The hire also came up during yesterday’s episode of The View. Meghan McCain defended the former congressman after the audience laughed at a clip highlighting Gowdy’s hypocrisy. “You can laugh all you want about Trey Gowdy, but he’s one of the great congressmen,” she said. “He’s a brilliant orator, he’s someone I have respected for years. You can laugh all you want, but the fact he’s joining Trump’s team is good news for Trump, and bad news for Democrats.”
