New Poll Says Nearly 60% of Americans Want Trump to Face Criminal Charges For January 6th

With the first three of at least six scheduled televised hearings by the January 6th House Select Committee’s investigation already aired, a new poll shows that nearly 6 in 10 Americans believe Donald Trump should be charged with a crime for his role in the incident.
The new ABC News/Ipsos poll also finds the same percentage of Americans believe the House Select Committee is conducting a “fair and impartial” investigation.

The poll also reveals that 58% of Americans think Trump should be charged with a crime for his role in the riot. That’s up slightly from late April, nearly two months before the hearings began, when a similar poll found that 52% of Americans thought Trump should be charged. An ABC News/Washington Post poll that asked a comparable question just days after the attack in January 2021 found that 54% of Americans thought Trump should be charged with the crime of inciting a riot.
⚡️BREAKING: Members of the Jan. 6 select committee say they’ve uncovered enough evidence for the Justice Department to indict Trump on CRIMINAL CHARGES for seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Attitudes on whether Americans think Trump is responsible for the attack on the U.S. Capitol remain relatively stable. In the new ABC News/Ipsos poll, 58% of Americans think Trump bears a “great deal” or a “good amount” of responsibility for the attack on the Capitol. This is unchanged from an ABC News/Ipsos poll in December 2021 and similar to the findings of an ABC News/Washington Post poll conducted just after the insurrection in January 2021.
Barbara McQuade, who we admire and respect, said: “Filing criminal charges against Trump in connection with efforts to overturn the election will likely spark civil unrest." She's usually correct and speaks carefully.
But what about from NOT filing criminal charges against Trump?— Duty To Warn 🔉 (@duty2warn) June 11, 2022
When divided by party lines, it’s far more clear to see how Americans are absorbing and processing the information from the hearings. 91% of Democrats think Trump should be charged with a crime compared to 19% of Republicans. On whether Trump bears a “great deal” or a “good amount” of responsibility for the attack, 91% of Democrats and 21% of Republicans say he does. Among self-described independents, 62% think Trump should be charged and 61% think he bears a “great deal” or a “good amount” of responsibility.
