New Poll Has Susan Collins Trailing by the Largest Margin Yet
For the first years of her Senatorial career, Susan Collins mostly flew under the radar. She’s become quite well known in the age of Trump, though. While she has sometimes been willing to stand up to the President, there have also been incidents where she sided with him despite intense criticism.
Collins actions over the last 3 years have made her quite unpopular with both Democrats and Republicans. And according to a new poll, the Maine senator now trails her likely opponent, Sara Gideon, by a margin of 9%.
The poll conducted by a new service called Victory Geek. The survey showed Gideon with a vote total of 51% compared to 42% for Collins.
Gideon is well known in Maine as she currently serves as the states Speaker of the House of Representatives. She is the presumptive opponent of Collins, though she hasn’t won her primary at this point. If Collins’ opponent was to be be Elizabeth Sweet, she would still trail by 1 point.
Collins was already set to face a tough reelection campaign, but her vote to acquit Donald Trump from impeachment further hurt her popularity. She said at the time, “I believe that the president has learned from this case. The president has been impeached. That’s a pretty big lesson.”
Gideon is happily fundraising off the results of the poll. She tweeted on Thursday morning, “Just in: a new Maine Senate poll has us ahead of Senator Collins — the third poll in a row that has us leading. I know that we can win this race, but we need to be able to maintain this momentum all the way to November. Can you chip in to help?”
