According to the conservative website The Washington Examiner, Republicans in North Carolina are growing increasingly exhausted with one of their members, Rep. Madison Cawthorn, and they would like to see him replaced because he’s “hurting the reputation of the party” in the state.
During his freshman year in the House, Cawthorn has become strongly identified with the extremist MAGA wing in the Republican minority of the House along with fellow Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). In new interviews with the Examiner, several conservatives in his home state expressed their frustration with him and his “antics,” which are becoming more unhinged and extreme.
Cawthorn, who recently had his driver’s license revoked, is “stumbling at home and abroad as his bid to play Republican kingmaker falls flat with voters and alienates colleagues,” said one representative. Another senior North Carolina Republican put it more bluntly, saying Cawthorn’s “antics” are “wearing thin with his colleagues and with Republican voters, though he still has a limited but fiercely loyal following with some activists.”
Madison Cawthorn does not represent young people.
My name is Eddie Geller, I am a proud Democrat, a millennial, and I am ready to bring back competent representation to our Congress.

While Cawthorn is popular outside the state with Donald Trump’s fanbase as he ties his political future to the Former Guy, he hasn’t generated nearly the same kind of popularity with his fellow North Carolinians, nor even his own constituents any longer.

The Examiner quotes another GOP operative, who observed, “His act is wearing thin,” before adding, “North Carolina’s Republican Party has long had a split between [former Sen. Jesse] Helms conservatives and moderates. But antipathy toward Cawthorn increasingly unites a lot of them.” Cawthorn recently called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a “thug” and continues to spread QAnon conspiracy theories, as well as Trump’s Big Lie of election tampering in the 2020 Presidential election.

One North Carolina GOP campaign staffer summed it up for the rest of the body: “Cawthorn is not well regarded with Republicans statewide in North Carolina. Many of us think he is an embarrassment to our party and state.”
