Nancy Pelosi Has Spoken To Joe Manchin, Thinks HR1 Has A Chance
HR1, the voting rights bill that Democrats have proposed in response to right-wing legislation being proposed or even passed around the nation to suppress voters, still has a chance, according to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Joe Manchin (D-WV) has been roundly criticized for not supporting certain progressive goals and legislation while Democrats hold the House, Senate, and White House. However, Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) says she’s not ready to give up on the legislation, or on Manchin.
The clips below are from a CNN interview, in which Pelosi talks about a variety of matters including the G7 summit with President Joe Biden, and the HR1 bill. In the first she discusses the difference between Biden and the former president where Vladimir Putin is concerned. In the second, she talks HR1 and Manchin.

Pelosi says that while HR1 was not the main topic of her recent conversation with Senator Manchin, it did come up, and she was left with the impression that “the door is ajar” and he can be brought around to support the legislation.
According to the Washington Post, when the bill passed the House and headed for the Senate, it promised to achieve a number of goals including requiring each state to set up a system that would automatically register eligible voters, guarantee an option for same-day voter registration, and require the polls to be accessible at least some time outside the typical 9-5 workday window. It would also impose regulations to help reduce gerrymandering, so that all votes count equally.
Pelosi says she’s not ready to accept defeat on a bill that could protect voting rights for all Americans.
