House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said Wednesday that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden will be sworn in as the 46th president of the United States and that President Donald Trump should “stand up like a man and accept” defeat.
Speaking with MSNBC’s Ayman Mohyeldin, Pelosi said that Trump is simply trying to “stir the pot” by threatening to declare victory before all the votes are counted. But, the Speaker said, that will not stop the inevitable.
“On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden will be inaugurated president of the United States. The states will count the votes that they have in a timely fashion,” Pelosi said. “The easiest thing for [Trump] to do is to stand up like a man and accept the results of an election of the American people.”
For Pelosi, Trump’s incessant bluster about voter fraud, his baseless allegations that Biden is bought by China (even though Trump was busted paying himself millions from a secret Chinese bank account), and his invitation to foreign actors to meddle in American elections constitute a losing strategy and a craven disdain for democracy. Trump, who has also refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power if he loses, is committing the very acts that he accuses others of doing, Pelosi charged.
“For him to make these kinds of statements shows his lack of patriotism, his undermining of our elections while he allows foreign countries like his friend [Russian President Vladimir] Putin to undermine the integrity of our election, he himself is doing it as well,” said Pelosi.
