Multiple GOP Lawmakers Come Out Against Trump’s Election Delay Idea

Donald Trump is a man who knows his election chances are in big trouble. This was obvious on Thursday morning when the President floated the idea of delaying the November election due to COVID-19. Trump is losing by double digits in a number of prominent polls.

The idea from Trump isn’t necessarily realistic. The lawmaking body that has the power to delay the election is the House of Representatives. And they are not interested in doing so. And neither are a bunch of Trump’s colleagues. A number of prominent Republicans have come out against the idea.

Wyoming Senator John Barrasso told Fox Business, “No, we’re not going to delay the election. We’re going to have the election completed and voting completed by Election Day. It’s going to take awhile to get all the votes counted, I am certain. We need to continue to do this as we do state by state.”

Marco Rubio was shorter than Barrasso, simply saying, “I wish he [Trump] never said that.”

Ohio Rep. Troy Balderson explained congress’ role in the matter. He took to Twitter, writing, “I emphatically do not support moving the 2020 election. Congress has the sole authority to set elections, and I will not support an attempt to delay this year’s.”

Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi had the final word, writing, “Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution states: “The Congress may determine the Time of choosing the Electors, and the Day on which they shall give their Votes; which Day shall be the same throughout the United States.”
