Mitch McConnell Welcomes Joe Manchin To The Republican Party

If Joe Manchin decides to flip from the Democratic Party to the Republican, he’s got a warm welcome waiting. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell — who would instantly become Majority Leader in the hypothetical case that Manchin took him up on the invitation — has expressed an open invitation.

Manchin has been railed at by his own party recently for standing in the way of passing the Build Back Better legislation that was President Joe Biden’s signature promise to the country, and even called a “DINO” — Democrat In Name Only, by many disappointed folks who were counting on that new legislation to help rebuild their livelihoods after the pandemic slammed the nation.

Appearing on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show, McConnell discussed the roles of Manchin and Senator Krysten Sinema in the Senate, including how the votes of more conservative Democrats can be relied on to help hold the filibuster in place, which prevents the slim Democratic majority — really only a majority with Vice President Kamala Harris as tiebreaker — from passing anything without right-wing support.

However, speaking to the New York Times, McConnell went even further, not only lauding the role of Manchin in helping block progressive legislation.

He criticized Democrats for speaking out against Manchin’s perceived betrayal, saying he thinks Democrats are sending Manchin the message that he’s “clearly not welcomed on that side of the aisle.”

He says it’s no secret that he has ‘wooed’ Manchin for years, and said, “Obviously we’d love to have him on our team. I think he’d be more comfortable.”
