Barack Obama has been very critical of President Trump’s coronavirus response. This has not sat well with many of Trump’s supporters. One supporter, in particular, has decided to hit back at the former president. Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell seemed to be especially annoyed at Obama’s criticism. McConnell told a group of supporters during a Trump campaign live stream, “I think President Obama should’ve kept his mouth shut.”
McConnell went on to say, “I think it’s a little bit classless, frankly, to critique an administration that comes after you. You had your shot. You were there for eight years. I think the tradition that the Bushes set up — of not critiquing the president who comes after you — is a good tradition.”
One of the most egregious examples of Trump going after Obama is accusing the 44th President of conspiring against Trump’s former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. There is also the fact that Obama criticized Trump in private to his former staff and not in public.
Then there is the fact that McConnell is accusing Obama of doing the same thing that he and Republicans did during Obama’s entire presidency. Obama is not the only former political figure to blast Trump’s response to the pandemic. Former Vice President Al Gore also weighed in by calling Trump’s reopening of the nation a, “botched reopening.”
We will see if the back and forth continues as the pandemic rages on.
