Mike Pence: “Great Confidence” COVID-19 Vaccine Will Be Available By Fall
Mike Pence on Tuesday reiterated the Trump administration’s claims that a vaccine for COVID-19 will be available soon. Experts have warned that the timing isn’t really predictable, and just two days ago, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell broke lockstep with the president to say that “nobody believes” there will be a vaccine before the end of the year. However, Pence said that he has “great confidence” the vaccine will be available by fall.
There are hopeful developments on the vaccine front. Dr. Anthony Fauci said on Monday that he has cautious optimism for a vaccine that is entering the final stage of testing. According to Washington Post, the vaccine in question is creating antibody responses in trial participants. Fauci said he briefed President Donald Trump on the progress of the vaccine — significant in itself, after recent reports that Trump was no longer taking briefings from the infectious disease expert.
Mike Pence is relaying these words as strong encouragement. Newsweek reports that in a Tuesday interview, he spoke with higher levels of optimism and a possible timeline.
I’ve got to tell you, when you’ve got Dr. Fauci saying that it’s not if, it’s when we have a vaccine, it gives you the signal that we really have great confidence that by this fall we’re going to have a vaccine.
He went on to say that the Trump administration is ordering millions of syringes, so that “the moment the FDA says a vaccine is safe and effective” it will be readily available.
