Former Minnesota Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann on Sunday finally shared her long-anticipated verdict on the 2020 presidential election. Spoiler: she lied.
“I want everyone to realize what we’re living through and what we’re witnessing is a coup. This is called a coup, and a coup is a political term, and what it means is an unlawful, unauthorized takeover of a legitimate government,” declared Bachmann.
Oxford defines a coup as “a sudden, violent, and illegal seizure of power from a government.” No political violence occurred in the United States on November 3rd. The events of January 6th, 2021 were much closer to a coup than was a peaceful election.
Recall that it was a violent mob of thousands of supporters of ex-President Donald Trump who – at his explicit direction – stormed the Capitol and attempted to assassinate the vice president and Speaker of the House.
It was but one of the numerous examples of Trump committing treason out in the open and getting away with it.
“America had a legitimate government, but this is an unauthorized, illegal takeover through voter fraud in last November’s election, and now H.R. 1 [will] forever cement that illegal takeover into place,” Bachmann said.
There is no evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 election. The bill that Bachmann mentioned is the For the People Act. It contains provisions that strengthen voting rights – an existentially terrifying prospect for the Republican Party and its dwindling base – and the security of future elections, which will be devastating for the conservative fear-mongering business.
“But make no mistake about it – what we’re watching is a coup. You see this in third-world countries. It’s happening in the greatest country in the world, the United States, but it is a coup,” Bachmann insisted again.
