Evgeny “Taxi King” Friedman is preparing to testify against Michel Cohen. A report from The New York Times claims the man is a Russian immigrant and business partner to Donald Trump’s embattled personal lawyer.
The Times says the Taxi King’s cooperation will be used as leverage against Cohen. If the plan works, Cohen could find himself working with special counsel Robert Mueller in regards to the Russian interference case with the 2016 Presidential election.
Friedman, under terms of the deal, will avoid jail time under the agreement and will assist federal and state prosecutors in investigations, The Times reported. The agreement was forged with help from New York state prosecutors.
It’s no secret that Michael Cohen is currently under investigation in the Southern District of New York. Cohen has not yet been officially charged with a crime and his next court date in regards to the case is set for Thursday.
Last month the FBI raided Cohen’s home, office, and hotel room and recovered various documents which are currently under review. The documents recovers are being reviewed by a special master to determine what falls under attorney-client privilege and what can be used by the government in a potential prosecution of Cohen.
Cohen owns a substantial number of taxi medallions in New York City and has partnered with Friedman for years.
Before agreeing to assist in Bob Mueller’s investigation, Friedman faced felony charges in New York on various counts of criminal tax fraud and grand larceny.
