The pressure appears to be building on both Michael Cohen and The Trump Foundation, which was run by the president and his children. Today, the Associated Press learned that the state of New York has just subpoenaed Trump’s former attorney, Michael Cohen in an investigation related to allegations of misconduct by those representing the Trump Foundation.
Back in June New York attorney General, Barbara Underwood sued the Donald J. Trump Foundation, alleging that the foundation took part in “illegal conduct” and mismanagement.
“As our investigation reveals, the Trump Foundation was little more than a checkbook for payments from Mr. Trump or his business to nonprofits, regardless of their purpose or legality,” Underwood said in June.
The June lawsuit implicated not only the President, but three of his five children, Eric, Don and Ivanka Trump. The subpoena of Cohen, may be related to the civil suit announced in June, or it could indicate that Underwood is moving forward with a criminal case against the President and his children as well.
The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has confirmed to CNBC that the subpoena has been issued. It is interesting to note, that anyone who is charged with a state crime is unable to be pardoned by the President. This would also obviously include the president’s children.
