Michael Cohen, President Trump’s former personal attorney, is in Washington D.C. and it is unclear why. Reporters from ABC News spotted Cohen with his criminal defense lawyer in the capital, but he avoided reporter’s questions.
ABC reporters on the scene asked the attorney why he was in D.C, if he was on his way to the special counsel Robert Mueller’s office, and if he was visiting the president. However, he refused to reveal the purpose of his trip or his intended destination.
Cohen is reportedly a vital source of information for Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. The attorney has already sat with Mueller’s team for more than 40 hours of interviews, ABC reports.
Cohen also provided key details about Trump paying off adult actress Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal over alleged extra-marital affairs with the president before he took office.
Cohen previously stated on record that Trump “directed” him to commit campaign finance violations. ABC News reported that Cohen told a federal judge in August the hush money payments were carried out “in coordination with and at the direction of a candidate for federal office”, making it clear Donald Trump directed the payments himself.
Cohen is due to be sentenced later this year for his role in the campaign finance violations, as well as six other felony counts, including tax evasion and making false statements to a bank.
