Mike Bloomberg was, at one point, thought to be an intriguing candidate to be the Democratic nominee. He took his time to enter into the nomination race, and it didn’t go well for him. Still, the former New York City mayor pledged to throw his support and his money behind Joe Biden.
While Biden is currently ahead in the polls, he will need a boost in some of the most competitive states. Bloomberg will be helping the Democratic nominee in, perhaps, the most important state. The former mayor has pledged $100 million towards helping Biden win the state of Florida.
If Biden was to win the sunshine state, it would be very difficult to find a path of victory for Donald Trump. So Florida, which polls show to be tightening, is key to Democratic chances.
Kevin Sheekey, an adviser to Bloomberg, said, “Voting starts on Sept. 24 in Florida so the need to inject real capital in that state quickly is an urgent need. Mike believes that by investing in Florida it will allow campaign resources and other Democratic resources to be used in other states, in particular the state of Pennsylvania.”
Ted Deutch, a Democratic congressman from Florida’s 22nd District, said of the pledge, “If you have the ability to make sure that you are able to speak directly to all of these different communities and where they live then you are going a long way to securing the states for Biden in this election. I’m glad that Mike Bloomberg recognized this and is prepared to make an investment to make sure that every one of those communities will be aware of the importance of this election.”
