Melinda Gates Drew the Line at Jeffrey Epstein

Melinda Gates was so concerned about her husband Bill Gates’s dealings with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein that she began consulting lawyers to explore the option of divorce two years ago.

The billionaire philanthropists announced their decision to divorce last week after declaring their marriage “irretrievably broken” without expounding on the reasons that led to the split.

Melinda has recently reintroduced her maiden name, French, into her social media profiles, and is said to have been ‘uneasy’ about Bill’s relationship with Epstein since at least 2013, when she reportedly warned her husband about associating with him.

Her meeting with divorce lawyers in October 2019 reportedly took place at roughly the same time as a New York Times article detailed Bill’s meetings with Epstein, which included an overnight stay at Epstein’s New York mansion. The article detailed Epstein’s connections with the rich and powerful, saying none of them “compared in prestige and power to the [then] world’s second-richest person, a brilliant and intensely private luminary: Bill Gates. And unlike many others, Mr. Gates started the relationship after Mr. Epstein was convicted of sex crimes.”

Melinda was reportedly furious with Bill for meeting with the wealthy sex offender and it proved to be “a turning point for the Gates’ relationship” according to a profile in the Wall Street Journal. Bill and Epstein first met in 2011, several years after Epstein reached a deal with authorities and was sentenced to 13 months confinement for soliciting prostitution from underage girls.

The conditions of that 2008 deal were still a source of controversy 11 years later when Epstein was charged with sex trafficking. Epstein was deemed to have died by suicide after he was found hanging in his New York jail cell.

Melinda could become the world’s second-richest woman, with a fortune estimated at $73 billion. According to the Bloomberg billionaires index, Bill Gates is currently ranked as the world’s fourth-richest person, with wealth totaling about $146 billion. It has also been reported that Melinda will not be seeking any spousal support.
