Meet Sully H.W. Bush – The Former President’s Dog Who’s Melting Hearts
While the Bush family mourns the passing of their patriarch, 94-year-old former President George H.W.Bush, there is one animal who also appears to be in mourning as well.
Sully H.W. Bush, a well trained yellow Labrador service dog, had been working with the former president for approximately seven months following the passing of Bush’s wife Barbara last April. While it has only been a short stint, Sully and Mr. Bush had developed quite a companionship.
Sully, who is named after the former airline pilot Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger III, who saved 155 passengers and crew members by landing a distressed aircraft, Flight 1549, on the Hudson River nine years ago, is able to perform two pages filled with tasks. These tasks include, answering the phone and fetching a variety of items. This came in handy as the health of Mr. Bush, who was confined to a wheelchair, deteriorated.
“As one person said, he can do just about anything except make you a martini, but not to worry, he can go get you someone to make you a martini,” explained Jim McGrath, the spokesman for Mr. Bush.
The following picture of Sully, posted by McGrath has gone viral this weekend:

George W. Bush also referenced the photo yesterday, providing additional details as to where Sully is headed off to next:
“As much as our family is going to miss this dog, we’re comforted to know he’ll bring the same joy to his new home, Walter Reed, that he brought to 41,” Bush wrote.
